The Thai Ridgeback is one of the rarest and most ancient primitive dog breeds in the world — a medium-sized, athletic, and highly independent sighthound-type dog that has existed in eastern Thailand, particularly on the island of Koh Chang and in the eastern provinces bordering Cambodia, for thousands of years in near-total isolation from other breeds. This geographic isolation is precisely what makes the Thai Ridgeback so remarkable: because the breed developed without significant crossbreeding for so long, it retains a genetic purity and primitive character that is extremely rare among modern dog breeds. The breed is one of only three breeds in the world that carries the distinctive dorsal ridge — a strip of hair growing in the opposite direction along the spine — the others being the Rhodesian Ridgeback and the Phu Quoc Ridgeback of Vietnam. The Thai Ridgeback's ridge comes in eight distinct patterns, more variety than any other ridged breed. The breed has a short, smooth coat that comes in four colors: red, black, blue, and fawn (Isabella), and is known for its spotted tongue — a trait it shares with the Chow Chow and Chinese Shar-Pei, suggesting ancient shared ancestry. Historically, the Thai Ridgeback was used in Thailand as a guard dog, hunting dog, and escort dog to protect people traveling through dangerous terrain. The breed was recognized by the AKC's Foundation Stock Service in 1997.
